New beginnings; a journey of belonging
I have been embarking on a career repositioning that enables me to stretch outside of the lens of designing. Running my own design practice for almost 10 years has been an absolute joy and filled with so many blessings in my professional chapters as well as my personal. Being a single parent, living as a single individual where every decision made is made by myself for me and my daughters is daunting and freeing all at the same time. I took a leap of faith to embark on a passion to work in an area that would bring me closer to human connection and relationships. I am now in my first year of my two year course in person-centred counselling. Juggling my design commitments and course work is real but the abundance of new thinking, self awareness and instilling to practice with the principles of the modality is so rewarding. It’s changed the way I relationship with clients and project peers, enabling me to immerse myself fully in the frame of verbal and visual connections but most importantly explore the pure artistry of hearing what’s not being said and wait patiently for what that reveals. For me this rich journey of two hats - a designer and a counsellor in training is quite a unique offering. Meeting my design outcomes with congruence, empathy and unconditional positive regard which are the core conditions of my training is an encouraging and enthralling journey of creative and collaborative paths, ones that are open and freeing in a deeper connection of minds.
As hard times approach us in the hands of artificial intelligence there lies a key word: ‘artificial’. Now more than ever we have to honour our humanity and ‘human-ness’ the mess, the marvel and the miraculous that comes with it because being human is unique to us all and how we connect in our human capacity is vital to our empowerment in this digitally dictating dimension we cannot ignore responding to.
As I continue to practice with creative curiosity I am softly creating a space for make create and belong. I love that it’s not thought out at this stage, it’s just a place to start and do what my training is equipping me to do, allow for the here and now to present itself and let relationships embody, enrich and drive its connection and evolution.
